Supporting bereaved parents in your community

Children aren’t supposed to die before their parents. But sometimes they do. Parents are left feeling isolated, because it’s hard for others to begin to imagine the pain and devastation they are going through.

Everyone grieves differently, and this can put relationships under intense pressure. Each family member has lost a unique relationship, and family life can feel shattered. Friends and relatives often feel helpless, and churches unsure how to give the support that is much needed.

The Bereaved Parents’ Network exists to provide support for bereaved parents through a telephone support service, where they can be put in touch with another parent who has ‘been there’ and can provide a listening ear.

We also run day and weekend events, where bereaved parents can find hope and strength for the future, and realise they’re not alone.

We provide leaflets and a regular e-newsletter, with stories from bereaved parents and insights into bereavement, as well as many practical tips on providing ongoing support for bereaved parents. There are also articles under Support Net on the Care for the Family website, which leaders and others will find very helpful, such as ‘The Loss of a Child: a Parent’s Grief’.
