We look out at our community and see need – those things that aren’t working – and seek to help. That’s a right thing to do. But in addition - why not reach your community in a different way? Here’s how…
Explore the community, discover those things that are working - and celebrate them! Gratitude and thankfulness are often in short supply. Imagine your church being a purveyor of these things.
You could sponsor an annual awards scheme and hold an awards banquet. Reward the most socially minded young person in your community; the greatest example of courage; the local personality of the year; the family that has overcome the greatest hurdles. Sell tickets, and donate the money to charity. Provide the awards and prizes or ask others to come in with you in this.
One church held a party for the teachers from the local schools – just to say thank you. Another church held a party for the local shopkeepers – just to say thank you. You could do that, too!
When you begin to think about this, the opportunities seem endless - the postal workers; the refuse collectors; paper delivery people, etc. What about good neighbours; youth workers; police ...
