A tribute to 'Auntygran'

Photo of Maureen Allen, aka AuntygranMaureen Allen loves being a toddler group leader, despite her age...

"I have been helping in our church mother and toddler group since 1986. I started by just standing in for someone one morning … and I have been involved ever since!

"Originally it was called Shoppers' Crêche. We offered love and support to any mums who wished to come in and we were quite happy if they wanted to pop out to the shops, library, etc. while we watched their baby. (Obviously we can no longer do this.)

"Now we are known as 'Building Blocks Parent and Toddler Playgroup'. Our aim is still to make everyone welcome, but we are more structured - offering story time and craft each Tuesday, beside plenty of toys for all ages. I am usually in charge of the craft."

Events to organise

"I start in October with the organisation of our annual walk (10 times round the church building) for Children in Need in November. Afterwards I collect and send in the proceeds.

"On the last session before Christmas, we let those who want to dress up in nativity clothes and we go into the church itself for a very short 'service'. It's just a short story and a couple of carols before going back to the hall for refreshments and presents. This year we tried a similar event at Easter (with Easter cards and chocolate rabbits).

"Of course, we would like to see these families at our church services, but we feel these short times in the sanctuary are a gentle introduction. Recently some families have started to come on Sundays which means our 'Rattlers' crêche is quite busy."

'Auntygran'

"I have lived alone for the last six years and the playgroup has become a great part of my life. I have made many friends among the parents. One family in particular have children the same age as my grandchildren; they call me 'Auntygran'.

"My motto for work in the playgroup is from the old chorus: 'Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me'."

Maureen Allen very sadly and unexpectedly passed away on 3rd November 2009 - a toddler group leader to the end.
