Sandra Croney encourages us with what happened in her toddler group once the church 'got involved'…
"Our group has been running for 27 years now. It's always been popular and is currently the best attended toddler group for miles around.
"Last year we made a big change to the way our group was run. Instead of having one person leading it, we decided to have a committee from church at the helm.
"How did we manage it? Well, during one toddler session we ran a church coffee morning, inviting all the church members to visit us. It was amazing. Some of the members stated that they 'hadn't realised how many families attended' (up to 40). Many had visualised a few mums sitting with a baby at their feet, not realising the noise and craft tables, bikes and soft play that went on.
"So, the church got involved. We now have a team in the kitchen who provide the snacks and juice for the children, and tea and toast for the carers. A university student, Emily, provides me with a six-month plan for the craft table - she's very good with research on the computer and gets some wonderful downloads. A couple of church elders come and mingle with the group - chatting to parents and helping with the crafts. Just being recognised by the church is confidence boosting.
"We don't preach to our toddler group - we listen and we get to know them. If you like, we provide a service.
"Since this change we have had families joining our Sunday services. Children have joined our Sunday School and we've also had many prayer requests from the parents. We appear to be going from strength to strength. Most importantly we now have regular prayer for the toddler group, and we feel as if it is worthwhile and a part of our church outreach work."
